ANIKAYA Birds Intensives will immerse participants in the movement world of the Birds, ANIKAYA’s Conference of the Birds ensemble. Participants will learn the movement vocabulary and approach of four individual Birds, as well as experience the entangling practices that brought these very different artists into one deeply connected flock.
Each program will be anchored in a place that offers us unique insights into the history of human movement and migration, and that provokes important conversations about our constructions of identity, community, history and the present moment.
In June 2025 the ANIKAYA Birds Intensive will return to Centre Chorégraphique Multicorps in Cotonou, Benin. Benin is at the epicenter of a global conversation on decolonization, repatriation of stolen art works, and is the spiritual center of the African and African diasporic religion of Vodou and its descendants in the Americas and the Caribbean. In addition to learning about and experiencing the history, culture and arts of Benin, participants will study Beninese traditional dance with ANIKAYA artist and Multicorps faculty Orphee Ahehehinnou.
This intensive marks nine years of ongoing collaboration between ANIKAYA and Multicorps.
Spaces in the program will be limited. Applicants who are not selected for the program this year will have preference in future iterations of the Benin intensive as well as upcoming intensive programs with the Birds in India and Indonesia. We will welcome participants from anywhere in the world, and will hold a minimum of five spaces for local and regional dancers.

FAQ
I can’t afford the full price, are there scholarships?
Yes! There will be some partial scholarships available this year, and we will work with you to raise other funding as well. We have a staff member who will guide you step by step. Also, if you’re a college, university or conservatory student, there may be funding available through your school.
Do I need a visa?
Participants from the US and EU will need e-visas. We will help you navigate that process. It is very simple and fast. Participants with passports not from the US and EU very likely also can use the e-visa system, and we will guide you based on your nationality.
Do I need to be a trained dancer to participate?
No! There is no one that will come to this program trained in all of the forms that will be taught in the intensive. Very likely most will come with very little to no experience at all in these particular practices, even if they are trained professional dancers. We are hoping to have a combination of people who are trained dancers in any form and people who love dance but are not formally trained. What we are looking for is a mix of interests, histories and experiences, and an interest in thinking and discussing issues of identity, migration, colonization/de-colonization, human rights and all of the complexities that emerge in our crossing of paths – all through an embodied practice. The intensive will welcome all people with all kinds of bodies. That said, every day will be full of dance!
Where will I stay?
We will be booking single rooms within a short walking distance of the studio.
What vaccines do I need?
We recommend contacting a travel clinic in advance of travel. We will also send guidance and resources after your registration.
Is Benin safe?
The US State Dept lists Benin as “Level 2: exercise increased caution.” NOTE: This is the same caution level as France, Belgium, Italy, the UK and Germany and many other countries. We will not be traveling to any dangerous areas. Only the very northern part of Benin is considered unsafe by the US State Dept and we will not be traveling to the north.
How will I get from the airport to Multicorps?
We will send someone from the program to pick up each traveler. The airport is approximately 10 minutes drive from Multicorps.
Is the water drinkable?
The water in Cotonou is drinkable, but we will also provide purified water every day for all participants.
I’m vegan, will it be difficult to find food?
We will be providing food throughout the program. There will always be vegetarian food that is not just “without the meat”. And you will answer questions about dietary restrictions on the application form. Food that fits your restrictions will be provided. If you have a serious food allergy, we will consult with you and a medical professional in advance to be safe.
